Bombeck, Erma * American journalist and humorist, the author of 11 books and a column read by millions in 700 cities. Her books include "The Grass is Always Greener Over The Septic Tank," "If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What am I Doing in the Pits?" and "A Marriage Made in Heaven... Or Too Tired For An Affair."
A newspaper reporter before she quit work to care for a husband and three kids, she began writing a humor column in 1964 and was syndicated the following year. With a mischievous smile and an exuberance of spirit, Bombeck knew that she wanted to be a humor writer from the age of 14.
Her mom was 16 when Erma was born and they were lifelong best friends. A bright student, Erma was also a good dancer and blues singer. Devastated by her dad's death when she was nine, she withdrew for a while and lost weight. Two years later she had a new stepdad, a feed-store clerk named Tom Harris. She resented him at first, but they became close pals.
Erma started a school paper and worked after school as a copy clerk at the local paper. It was there she met and fell in love with a fellow copy clerk, Bill Bombeck from the minute they met. Bill was drafted and left for Korea, but they exchanged letters. He mustered out in 1947 and entered the University. They married in 1949 and he taught high school history while she polished her writing skills on obits and features at the paper. In 1953 she quit to stay home with Betsy, whom they adopted when she failed to get pregnant. She gave birth to Andrew in 1955 and Matthew three years later. She and Bill, who became a high school administrator, were married for 46 years.
Her sense of humor, irrepressible, spilled out in her daily life with tossing off wry domestic quips, such as "Housework, if you do it right, will kill you," and "Why clean the oven? If you can still get a cupcake in there without touching the sides, you're in good shape."
When her youngest was in school, Erma began writing a column, "At Wit's End," about home life in suburbia, for the Dayton Journal Herald. With a year she was syndicated across the country. Her popularity skyrocketed with her books and the family moved to Paradise Valley, CA in 1971, a rural, mountainous community.
Her celebrity increased with the years. She did humor segments on "Good Morning America" from 1975 to 1986 and 11 of her books became bestsellers. She kept her fame in perspective as only one who can laugh about herself is able. She contributed to numerous charities including the American Cancer Society. She kept the same friends for years and never put on airs.
In 1992, Bombeck had a double mastectomy for breast cancer. The following year in July, she suffered total kidney failure, which required her to undergo dialysis four times a day while waiting for a transplant. In addition, she hooked herself up to an I.V. bag for a ten-minute peritoneal dialysis treatment every day.
The life-saving kidney transplant came through on 4/03/1996. She died in less than a month after the operation, on 4/22/1996, 3:27 AM, San Francisco. A selection of her columns, which were being syndicated in 600 newspapers by the time she died, was published in a book called "Forever, Erma," which became a bestseller.

Linda McCartney.
from sites like prazdniki.ru on 12.12.2002
А давняя страсть к фотографии явили миру альбомы "Linda's Pictures" (1977), "Photographs" (1982), "Linda's Mccartney Sun Prints" (1988), "Sixties - Portrait Of An Era" (1992), запечатлевшие знаменитых рок-музыкантов 60-80-х годов.

Andersen, Hans Christian * Danish writer of fairy-tale stories, plays, novels, poems and travel books. His fables are translated into more languages than any other books, outside of the Bible. Andersen is chiefly remembered for "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Red Shoes." His only ambition was to become a writer held in esteem. Working towards that goal, he wrote prolifically and with versatility. It was his fairy tales, his "trifles," as he called them, that brought him world-wide recognition. Altogether, he wrote 156 tales which have been translated into more than a hundred languages. He also wrote three autobiographies.
His life was not that idyllic. He grew up in a one-room house in the slum area of Odense. His dad, a cobbler, went insane and died when Hans was 11. His paternal grandmother was a pathological liar and her husband had a reputation as the town lunatic. The boy had few friends and spent much of his time alone with his homemade toys.
To make money for the family, as a youth, Andersen worked in a cloth factory where he was often embarrassed by the workmen's bawdy humor. Gifted with a fine soprano voice, he loved to sing, that is, until the day at work when his co-workers pulled off his pants to see if he was a girl. At 14, ungainly, dressed like a beggar and carrying a small bundle of clothes, he set out for Copenhagen to find his fortune.
Industrious, the boy found a patron, an Italian opera singer. He was soon taking singing and dancing lessons at the Royal Theater, the director of which, Jonas Collin, later became his lifelong patron and substitute father.
At 17, he published a short story, followed by a book and then a novel. The turning point in his career came with the publication of his first volume of "Eventyr," (Fairy Tales). His fame was compensation for his poor looks, poverty, and deep sense of inferiority. He was a tall, delicate man with small blue eyes and a large, sharp nose. His arms and legs were disproportionately large for his body and his feet were huge. He attracted nicknames that were descriptive, such as "stork" and "lamp post."
At his best, Andersen was simple, sincere, affectionate and witty. At his worst, he was vain, irritable, snobbish and terribly peculiar, with fits of depression and phobias. A hypochondriac and high strung, Andersen was often ill, and deeply afraid of being buried alive. His fear of dying in a fire was so great that he packed a rope in his suitcase when he traveled in order to escape from a window.
He never married. Nonetheless, his journals reveal him to have been heterosexual, though timid toward women and ashamed of his sexual feelings. He never had a sexual experience with either man or woman, though his sexual desires were normal. He wrote, "I am still innocent but my blood is burning. I'm half ill. Happy is he who is married, who is engaged to be married." He was unable to capture the mate he so desired, in his mind, because he was so ugly. His first love was a schoolmate who remained a chaste vision. Next was the 18-year-old daughter of his patron, Jonas Collin. She was not interested and asked him to stop his amorous letters. Jenny Lind, the famous Swedish nightingale, came into Andersen's life in 1843 when she came to Copenhagen on a singing engagement. He showered her with poems and gifts. In 1845, he traveled to Berlin to spend Christmas Eve with her. When his plans proved barren, he spend the Christmas alone in a hotel room, close to tears. Her only reference of endearment to him was "brother," and "friend," but Andersen was devastated when she married in 1852.
He wrote loving letters to his male friends that may be construed as homosexual, were he not so starving for simple affection and praise. His only sexual outlet was masturbation, for which he felt enormous guilt. When Andersen visited brothels in the 1860s, he talked to naked prostitutes, emotionally unable to do more.
His health began to decline in 1874. First he suffered from bronchitis, then later from liver cancer. In 6/1875, his friends, Moritz and Dorothy Melchior, took him to their home outside Copenhagen, where he had a room with a balcony overlooking the Oresund. On July 29, he took to bed permanently. His hostess found him sleeping peacefully around 11:00 AM on 8/04/1875, but he died quietly 45 minutes later. At his breast was found a farewell letter written 45 years earlier by a woman whom he had loved. It was destroyed unread.

Borges, Jorge Luis * Argentinean writer, a literary giant with short stories, essays, poetry and all shades and types of books. He had a razor sharp wit and a self-depreciating style. Actually, Borges was a shy man, a vegetarian, blind for nearly 30 years and partly deaf.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest modern writers, he was compared to Edgar Allan Poe and Frank Kafka, a perennial candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. His works were translated into more than 20 languages, and he won scores of literary prizes for his production of more than 35 volumes of writing.
Borges lived the last three months of his life in Geneva, Switzerland where he married his second wife in 4/1986, inasmuch as the marriage would not be recognized in Argentina, where divorce is not legal. Died of liver cancer on 6/14/1986, Switzerland.

Brahms, Johannes * German musician, a composer, pianist and conductor. His compositions of every type of music, except opera, are still played.
Brahms was the son of a seamstress, lame and homely, 17 years older than her husband, who lavished affection upon the boy. With a strong attachment to her until her death in 1865, Brahms cried out over her grave, "I no longer have a mother. I must marry!" His father was a doublebass player who literally eked out a living playing in a cafe near Hamburg. At one time his dad tried raising chickens and rabbits, at another time, attempted business in a small shop, he even considered emigrating to America. Jakob Brahms instilled in his son a desire for bourgeois respectability and comfort, but also a restless independence. Adept as a youngster, the boy first played piano professionally at 13 in taverns near the Hamburg docks where sailors just in from long voyages came to bed down with the ladies of the town. Always courteous to prostitutes, who found him an eager if awkward lover, his caustic side was more likely to surface with society women. He like to do all the courting, if a woman showed initiative, he put her off. Though he had at least seven major, unconsumated relationships with respectable women, he slept only with prostitutes.
As a child prodigy, Brahms performed a piano concert at age 15 and gained fame during his lifetime. Even when famous, Brahms lived modestly, dressed with economy and took pride in spending little on his food. He had no extravagant tastes and even in his passion for collecting original manuscripts of great masters, observed a frugal budget. Nonetheless he loved good food and drink, and when dining with friends, enjoyed a more liberal palate.
Gruff, acerbic and orderly, he never married. He had so pedantic a love of order that he boasted that he could find anything instantly, even in the dark, of his books or his work. This acute organization stopped short at his own person. He was always hopelessly rumpled in ill fitting garments, perhaps held together with a large safety pin in places. His clothes were always in disarray whether in his closet on on his body. As he matured, he cultivated a great, untidy gray beard.
His letters to his publisher show remarkable commercial astuteness, and he insisted on being paid enormous fees for his works. As conscientious as he was about his income, once in hand, he was careless about its management. Whole bundles of bank notes lay uncounted in his closet and he seldom if ever checked his bank balance. Though passionate and precise about his music, positions of conductor that were offered to him were regarded with indifference or evasion.
In his youth, Brahms declared that he could not marry and have a family as he had no money or position. However, even when he had both, marriage was not in his lexicon. He was not a misogynist as he paid homage to the fair sex by unconditional worship. He felt himself in love frequently, especially fascinated by a beautiful voice, but feeling that love would be returned, always avoided the decisive step. His solitude, privacy and independence were more important.
His closest approach to romance seems to have been his circumspect relationship, largely by correspondence, with Clara Shumann, the wife and later widow of Robert Shumann, one of Brahms earliest sponsors. He met the 14-year-older Clara when he was a handsome youth of 20, in September 1853. She was famed for her beauty and charm, the mother of seven children and deeply in love with her husband. When he played, she admired him profusely, calling him "a charming little man" to her sister. By the following year they were writing warm and encouraging letters to each other, filled with tenderness and care.
He was actually rather crusty and sharp-tongued. Once, before leaving a group of associates, he remarked, "If there is anyone here whom I've not insulted, I beg his pardon." When complimented upon the resemblence of one theme to that of another excellent passage, he told a fan, "Any ass can see that."
Two totally different sides may be seen in Brahms character, irony and reserve, coupled with genuine kindness and a readiness to help. He revered beauty, and was personally uncouth. He was a musical genius with an intense intellectual life, but he had aversions to ties of all kinds that would infringe upon his own self interests.
Brahms health began to decline in May 1896. Shocked by the death of his beloved Clara Schumann on May 20, he was further upset by missing the funeral when he took the wrong train in error. He caught a chill at the cemetery from which he never quite recovered, though it was cancer of the liver that ultimately caused his death. The old bachelor took to his bed on 3/25/1897 under the devoted care of his housekeeper, Celestine Truxa, in his Vienna lodgings for the quarter century. All day on April 2nd he lay unconscious. Early on the following morning, he turned over and two great tears rolled down his jaundiced cheeks. When he died at 10:30 AM, the burly figure had become a thin old man.
